👗 Master Digital Pattern Making in Adobe Illustrator! 👗 🔍 Part 18: Using the Layer Tool Using layers is a very powerful way of organising and separating patterns or panels. When creating a document, you are given one layer. You can add new layers to your document. Click the burger menu and click “New layer.” Name the layer anything you like such as UK4, select the highlight colour of the layer and click ok. Any patterns or panels on this new layer will appear above the patterns or panels on the original layer. You can add as many layers as you like. You can move layers up and down in the list by clicking and dragging. You can also rename a layer by double clicking the text box of that layer. You can hide the contents of a layer by clicking the eye box on or off. This is especially handy when you have multiple patterns and only want to work on one pattern at a time. You can also lock a layer by clicking the lock box on or off. The contents of the layer remains visible but you are unable to edit it. Click the burger menu and select the paste remembers layers option from the dropdown list. From now on any objects that are copied and pasted to a new document will come with the same layer structure. This is super handy for creating graded nests very quickly. Without using this feature all the patterns would appear on one layer, causing quite a mess. 📐 Ready to elevate your skills?
