Temple Composting - Do's and Don'ts - How to manage low waste temple by Anupama Harish

Published 29 Apr 2022

We started composting pooja flowers at Sri Shankthi Maha Ganapathi Temple in Kalyan Nagar #sustainable , Bengaluru about 5 years ago. My dear friend Anupama Harish Anupama Harish introduced us to her brother Ashok Betraj Ashok Betraj who was the trustee at the temple. We may have mesh composters at 40 other temples in Bengaluru, but only 4 or 5 continue to use and maintain. The failure of other temples is due to lack of interest when it is given free, lack of supervision, no incentive to sweeper, no operation and maintenance budget. Even our Kalyan nagar temple has been through ups and downs in maintenance, but they still add the used pooja flowers in Mesh composters. Mesh composters are also very forgiving, even if you don't add browns, Microbes, due to very good air circulation and rains in Bengaluru, it will turn into beautiful black gold with the blessing of earthworms. It is also running because of the supervisor @mohanty_rk and to do the minimum work required on a daily basis. To be a low waste temple, here is the divine mantra 1. Put up boards that says "This is a plastic free temple", "No single use disposables allowed" at multiple places. Strictly impose this rule irrespective of worrying about reduction devotees or inconvenience to devotees. No God forgives us for trashing the planet. 2. Install mesh composters (Do it youeself) to manage used pooja flowers, kitchen waste, garden cuttings and dry leaves. Do not allow garlands with thermocole or shiny plastic of any kind 3. Use donne or steel cutlery In this video Anupama Harish speaks about sustainable living at home or temple or institutions. She walks the talk and sings melodiously to pray for low waste lifestyle on this mother earth. Full credit to the kannada song "Poojisalende hoogala tande" from "Eradu kanasu" movie and to the music director, recording label, singers. #saynotosingleuse #saynotomixedwaste #sustainablepractices #sustainableliving #climatechange #climateaction #meshcomposting #shishiracomposting #vasukicomposting #sustainable
